feminine blog

There is just something about a feminine room. It evokes feelings of warmth, traditional glamour and romantic décor. A feminine interior is usually characterised by curving lines, free form and lush textures.

Interior design 101 teaches the importance of texture and in a feminine space this is even truer. Soft materials and fabrics will soften up the hard lines of furniture which is very important to the curving, free form of this design style, such as upholstering the lineal Grace sofa by Kovacs in a velvet fabric from Villa Nova’s Velluti collection has given it a much softer look. The hard metallic finishes and glass table top are also offset by the visually plush Soothing Effect carpet from SmartStrand. All of the elements when put together create a real depth and plenty of interest to the space.

Metallics remain a strong trend in feminine interiors, especially varying metallic finishes – mixing warm tones such as gold and copper with cool ones like silver creates a really interesting look. The idea is to achieve a metallic look that  is more subtle rather than ‘bling’. The main metallic element shown in this luxe room by our own McKenzie & Willis Interior Design team is the bold floral wallpaper with the warm gold background by Icon Textiles from their Couture Rose collection.

This has then been paired with gold pieces from the Kartell Metallics range and the brushed silver finish of the Chevron Cabinet by French Country. These metallic finishes work together to add glamour and sophistication and create visual interest by reflecting light around the room.

Feminine interiors are usually known for their use of soft, subtle colours however, jewel tones have increasingly become a popular palate for designers to choose from to up the glamour in your space. Jewel tones have a vibrant appeal and are often associated with a more luxe style of interior. The gorgeous Couture Rose wallpaper, the Velluti velvet fabric on the Kovacs Grace sofa and the collection of custom made McKenzie & Willis cushions all have jewel tones and marry together perfectly in this feminine space evoking a sense of luxury. Jewel tones do make a big statement so you can partner them with other jewel tones to intensify the space or pair your favourite with neutral shades to make it pop.

Don’t be put off by the term ‘feminine’ when it comes to décor – it often symbolises an idea and mood rather than a physical characteristic. If it is too much for you, you can always pair your feminine decorative features with masculine ones to give each room its own dynamic feel and the best of both worlds!
