McKenzie & Willis are excited to launch our new exhibition series
On display in our Christchurch showroom August 13- 22, the 2021 exhibition will feature
‘Materiality’ infers to notions of using materials- often unexpected, for their inherent qualities and engaging them in a process to create an aesthetic, emotive artwork.
About the Featured Artists
Christchurch born and bred, Callum Pankhurst completed a diploma in Craft Design at Christchurch Polytechnic in the mid-1990s. His inquisitive interest in materials has led to extensive experimental research and development, with his highly personal, object and art pieces reflective of this process. Callum’s paintings continue this design aesthetic and are physical in their making. Using workshop equipment to grind brass into the works and layer homemade solutions, these works are unique. Callum is also the director of ‘Crafted’ (crafted.net.nz) a design studio specialising in creating bespoke architectural interiors, lighting and furniture. His designs have been selected for many BEST Design Awards.
Also a Christchurch native, Kara Burrowes is a multimedia artist with a Bachelor Fine Arts from Canterbury University and a degree in Landscape Architecture from Lincoln University. Her process is experimental and intuitive, focusing on smaller subtleties, emphasising the mundane and overlooked, referencing them and giving them a new life. Kara’s past work has often looked towards the urban environment for inspiration, but lately has been exploring the concepts of ‘Void’ and ‘Absence’ while playing with materials and process. In doing so her work emphasises ‘white space’, with her wooden works drawing attention to gaps and her paintings giving way to large expansive skies. Kara has exhibited extensively and her work is held in collections in New Zealand and overseas, she can boast to being a Wallace Art Awards finalist in 2017 & 2018, runner up in the TVNZ1’s Design Junkies in 2019, a Parkin Drawing Prize finalist in 2020 and a Zonta Female Art Awards finalist 2021.
