Grey skies, chilly mornings and longer nights…winter is finally upon us! With the weather cooling down, now is the perfect time to look at updating your interior. To help get you started, our interior design experts have put together their top tips to keep that cosy warm feeling inside.
Lounge
Now that outdoor living is no longer the focus of entertaining, look at rearranging your indoor furniture. Create intimate spaces in your lounge by grouping seating together to be more conducive to conversation. Make the most of the winter warmth, arranging your spaces to catch the sun where possible. Be wary if you have items prone to fading though and ensure you keep them out of harmful rays. The low winter sun can still be just as damaging. If you have one, position furniture around a fireplace- it will be your new focal point during the winter months.
Change wall art to warm tones and use this to build out a colour scheme. Go for cosy and comforting hues and don’t be afraid to be bold with more saturated colours. Metallic elements such as brass can pick up and reflect the warm tones of your interior.
Layer your look and think of ways to up the warmth factor in your home. Lined or bumph interlined curtains will add another dimension to your interior while helping to keep the warmth in. Luxaflex Duette Blinds are a great insulating option that also looks great. They help to reduce any potential heat loss and increase the R-value of your windows when closed (a measurement of a product’s ability to resist the transfer of heat).
Add texture with throws and cushions. Look for fur, wool and knitted pieces, you can easily change out as the seasons change. For a more permanent look, leather and texture upholsteries on sofas and armchairs are perfect for all year around. Consider bouclé, soft wools and heavily textured weaves to give you that tactile feel.
Dining
Update your dining area with warming winter hues. Change from clean whites to brown based neutrals and deep charcoals, from citrus tones to ochres and warm olive or from cool reds to rust and terracotta tones. Incorporate the warming look of wood where possible. If you don’t already have a timber dining table or chairs, add hand crafted wooden elements such as bowls and other accessories to your look.
Use texture to add cosiness. Drape alpaca furs or sheepskins over dining chair seats, add a textured linen table cloth and consider a rug for under your dining table. You will love the extra plush feel of softness under your feet a rug will give you.
Look to your lighting to create ambience; a pendant over your dining table or set of beautiful candles are the perfect winter accessory. Keep them low and moody for a feeling of warmth.
Bedroom
Replace duvet inners with winter weight and consider adding an extra layer of warmth to your bed such as a woollen blanket or Fairydown Espresso blanket. Goosedown and feather filled inners are a great option for the cooler months as they mould to your body and keep out the drafts while still being light and breathable. Look for a high level of down to ensure extra cosiness.
Dry clean and air out any items that have been sitting in your linen closet for a long time so they are fresh and ready to layer up on your bed. Use cushions to change up your look from the warmer months and to bring in a little colour and pattern to the mix. A throw or comforter at the end of the bed not only adds a cosy element but can double as much needed extra blanket on cold nights. Complete the look with a soft velvet head board and bedside lamps with warm hued bulbs.
Don’t forget the bed itself. For the most blissful sleep this winter, ensure your bed is still up to the job. If you’ve had your mattress longer than 10 years or you are suffering from aches and pains, it may be worth considering a new bed.
