This year’s Outdoor Living Collection has been expertly handpicked by Jayne Cross-Hunter and her furniture buying team. We recently caught up with Jayne to learn all about what makes this incredible collection unique, what’s new and her advice for styling the summer ahead.
What can we expect from this new collection?
This is our most fashion forward collection yet. There are lots of new and exciting materials to be seen this season as well as a multitude of styles and designs. We quite literally have something for everyone, from classic and elegant teak lounge settings through to contemporary and modern aluminium dining pieces.
What makes this collection unique?
It is a truly international collection of outdoor furniture, bringing together the world’s finest brands and the best in technology, design and style. We are always looking out for international trends, going beyond our shores to for the latest in outdoors. Among the various styles, this year we are pleased to present a very unique look – Black UV resistant painted teak from Harbour. This is a great alternative to natural teak that complements a modern aesthetic.
What materials feature strongly?
As always, we have chosen top quality materials specifically designed for the outdoors. Teak and powder-coated aluminium feature heavily, simply because they have proven durability in an outdoor environment. In fact, powder-coated aluminium is one of the highest performers. It will not fade or rust and will always remain as good-looking as they day you got it. The teak used in our collection is plantation grown, which means it is not harvested from natural forests. It is premium quality, offering beautiful natural style, while exhibiting high levels of outdoor resilience.
Outdoor weaves and Sunbrella Fabrics are a real highlight, softening the look and providing a tactile finish. New and innovative finishes such as the flat weave featured on the Fortuna dining chair and bar stool offer extra comfort while remaining durable and resistant to the harsh climate of New Zealand.
Concrete is also a notable material we have introduced this year. The concrete pieces from Portico are glass fibre reinforced and are perfect for windy areas. They are easy-care and work wonderfully as a contrast to other elements in our range.
What steps have you taken to ensure the collection will last in the harsh New Zealand climate?
We do our research, selecting items based on proven technology and tested for the New Zealand climate. This means that we can confidently offer a blanket 5 year warranty on all outdoor furniture under the McKenzie & Willis Promise.
What are the key trends this season?
There has been a real move towards soft curves and a focus on comfort this season. Outdoor sofas and armchairs are lower with a relaxed feel, mirroring key trends from their indoor counterparts. Coloured teak has made a breakthrough as well, providing a nice contrast and contemporary look.
What advice do you have for styling your outdoors?
Think about indoor outdoor flow. No longer should there be a defining point between your indoor and outdoor living areas but instead a seamless transition from one to the other. Small touches such as outdoor cushions and rugs can help achieve this. You can also soften the setting with curves using armchairs, pots, round tables and coffee tables.
Make dining a social event and channel the idea of slow living. Slow living is all about sharing beautiful moments with family and friends and taking the time to connect. Consider that your guests will be around the dining table for a long time so choose furniture that is up for the job and comfortable.
Finally, always provide shade for guests with an umbrella. The sun in New Zealand can be particularly harsh and a Jardinico umbrella offers great flexibility as weather conditions change.
