Interior Design doesn’t have to shout, it can be understated and beautiful – just like this coastal home. We interviewed Anna Kouwenhoven Deavoll (Interior Design Consultant at McKenzie & Willis) who worked with our client to create this light, breezy and beautiful interior.

Tell us a bit about the project? What were the requirements?

Our client had recently purchased a home in a beautiful beachside location and required new curtains and blinds. She wanted something that would complement her artworks and collected treasures without overtaking. The brief was for an understated yet sophisticated look with loads of soft, natural texture. With this in mind we hunted through our huge fabric range and Luxaflex samples to find the perfect combination to match her modern classic home.

How would you describe the interior design style?

A beachy, timeless and relaxed family home with a hint of the eclectic. The sheer curtains had a lovely, floaty appearance and the Hemptech linen curtains added lots of texture and contrast. We chose Luxaflex shutters for their timeless, elegant look and to provide privacy and light control for the client. Shutters are a practical & stylish solution and enhance any room! I loved the combination of different fabrics, textures & products. Everything really complimented our client’s individual style & existing furnishings. It was a great finished result.

Were there any existing features/styles you had to work with?

Our client already had a beautiful interior design style – white walls and natural timbers with touches of soft blue and lots of fantastic artwork & furniture collected over the years.

What products were used?

For the curtains we used Hemptech Estiva in Shadow and for the curtain sheers we used Westbury Paridiso linen sheer in white. We wanted the curtains to look luxurious so designed the curtains to hang from floor to ceiling and puddled the linen fabric on the floor. You’ll notice we only puddled them a few cms which gives a luxurious & relaxed feel as well as allowing for any fabric movement. We hung the curtains on a double track system which was top fixed into the ceiling. This provided a very streamlined appearance. A double track meant that privacy and filtered light could be achieved with the sheers whereas the lined curtains could be pulled across at night to add a cosy and insulating factor. It’s the best of both worlds and caters for all seasons.

We also used Luxaflex Duettes and Shutters. The Luxaflex Duettes created a similar light filtering effect to the sheers while also offering superior insulation. On the smaller windows we used Luxaflex Shutters which were such a nice touch and really played up the timeless coastal theme we were going for.

Were there any challenges?

Our client had to move into her home really quickly. As our curtains are made to order there is a lead time but we were able to offer temporary curtains while she waited.

You used a lot of Luxaflex blinds and products throughout the house. Why choose Luxaflex?

Luaxflex is renowned for their quality window furnishings. They come with 5 year residential guarantee and have a beautiful range of fabrics and materials to choose from. Plus they’re so versatile – we can find a solution for any home with Luxaflex!
